28 Sept : From Mandi to Naggar, Kullu.
Route : Mandi -> Pandon -> Aut -> Bhunter -> Kullu on NH21

Road is good.
Stay at Corporate orchid huts, booked from makemytrip.com, for 870 Rs. Resort is a basically a apple farm located on MDR29, Manali road. This is owned by a cheerful family. We enjoyed stay and nice food here, specially Mutton :-).
At evening we went to Kullu for Dusshera festival, but road to dusshera ground goes through old congested city. We had to come back just before 1 km from festival ground, traffic was stuck for more than 1 hr and there was no parking on the way.
29 Sept : From Naggar to Manali via MDR29, road in parallel to NH21, river beas flows between N H21 and MDR29, visited temples, mall road in Manali and moved for Solang valley on Rohtang road.
Stay: hotel Iceland, Solang Valley.
distance : 50 km (including local Manali).
Climate in Manali was surprisingly hot. We didn’t expected this kind of temperature in Manali. But as we moved to solang, 20 km from Manali, temperature was below 20 degree Celsius. Next day early morning temperature was 4 degree. We were excited and expected good snow view in Rohtang.
30 Sept : Solang to Rohtang, the final destination 🙂
Distance : 45 km
Time : 2:25 hrs
We started at early morning, 5 am, for Rohtang. Upto Gulaba road is good but after that there is no road I thought we lost our way, So I crosschecked route in GPS. After Gulaba next point is Kothi and then Marhi. Road is very bad because they are widening it to 2 lanes. Broken trucks, muddy roads, heavy traffic made driving very risky. I lost my LHS rear view mirror to a truck. and when we reached Rohtang we were really disappointed to see baron land without any snow :-(.
THIS IS THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING !!!
My advise is not to visit rohtang till they complete road work. And never visit Manali or rohtang during October. This is rush time because of Durga pooja holidays in Bengal and Gujrat.
Rohtang to Bilaspur, Himachal.
Same day returned back to Bilaspur, Himachal.
Distance 220 km.
Time : 10 hrs, took long breaks for along river side.
Stay : The Lake view, a HPTDC hotel.
1 Oct : From Bilaspur to Kurukshetra.
Distance : 220 km.
Time : 5 hrs with break and broken NH21A.
Manali and Rohtang are really crowed places at this time because of durga pooja holidays in Bengal and Gujarat. I choose wrong time for trip. But overall it was pleasing journey and a nice experience of worst road driving (Rohtang pass). I lost my LHS mirror here 😀 .
My GPS, HTC touch 3g with Google maps, was really helpful in locating places, finding routes, hotels, atms.
My car, suzuki SX4, performed very well in adverse conditions :-). Initially tire pressure was 40 psi (don’t know why workshop guys do this to me every time) which gave bumps on NH21A, then I reduced it to 33 psi for smooth drive. High GC made gave confidence to cross bumpy roads and a river on NH21A (bridge is broken near Nalagarh)
Overall I got 12.5 kmpl which is very good considering broken hill roads on NH21A and Rohtang pass, and traffic in Pinjaur, Manali and Rohtang
Total cost for 2 couples including hotels, food, petrol, toll taxes was about 13000 INR.
